Three Hogan Lovells partners win spots in the first National Law Journal "Trailblazers in Technology Law"

Washington D.C., 4 June 2019 – Three partners at international law firm Hogan Lovells have won places in The National Law Journal’s inaugural Trailblazers in Technology Law list. Rick Climan (Silicon Valley), Michele Farquhar (Washington D.C.), and Lisa Ellman (also Washington D.C.) were recognized for their pioneering legal work in technology M&A, telecommunications regulation, and unmanned aircraft systems respectively.

Climan, who leads a team of technology-focused M&A lawyers within our Corporate Practice in Northern California, has been recognized as one of the nation's leading tech M&A lawyers for more than two decades. Since moving his practice to Silicon Valley in 1994, Climan has dedicated himself to tech M&A transactions, representing some of the most prominent tech companies in California and beyond. Last year he handled the largest M&A transaction ever completed in the e-commerce sector, Walmart's cross-border $16 billion acquisition of a majority stake in Indian e-commerce company Flipkart. In 2017, Climan developed the "Buyer Power Ratio," an innovative tool for determining market practice in acquisitions of privately held companies. He remains committed to training the next generation of tech M&A lawyers.

Farquhar leads our Communications Practice, part of our Global Regulatory Practice, and is Co-Chair of our TMT Industry Sector group. Prior to joining Hogan Lovells in 1997, Farquhar had a long and distinguished career as a public servant with various roles in the Federal Communications Commission and at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. Her ability to innovate as the communications world has changed rapidly has made her one of the industry's most trusted advisors and advocates. Her work at the cutting edge of communications progresses, as demand for bandwidth and connectivity grows and develops at breakneck speed.

Ellman is also a former federal government lawyer, and leads our Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Practice, another part of our Global Regulatory Practice. UAS, more commonly referred to as drones, are a rapidly growing and relatively new commercial market sector. Her work has pioneered the expanded and safe use of commercial drones, helping to establish a legal framework that will unleash the exciting potential of drone technology for industries from public safety to package delivery in a way that is safe and secure. Ellman is also the co-founder and co-leader of the Commercial Drone Alliance, a leading industry body which advocates to move the commercial drone industry forward.
