WASHINGTON, D.C. 31 January 2017 – Mark Irion, formerly CEO of the Washington D.C. firm Dutko Worldwide, and most recently the President of Levick Strategic Communications, has joined law firm Hogan Lovells to create a dynamic new strategic communications service for its clients.
The move follows steps taken by Hogan Lovells to develop other innovative professional advisory services in areas such as cyber risk management, financial services regulatory consulting work, and global transfer pricing.
The new service focuses in the first instance on providing integrated communications advice to clients alongside the law firm’s legal services offerings.
Hogan Lovells selected Irion after an extensive search for a leader with the right mix of experience who could integrate strategic communications into the comprehensive legal services the firm provides to its clients worldwide, through its practices and industry sectors.
Steve Immelt, Global CEO, stated “Our strategic communications initiative is part of our broader effort to ensure we can provide complete solutions to our clients’ problems. Increasingly, successful strategies for resolving complex matters involve the ability to communicate effectively in the public arena as well as in legal proceedings. In this digital age public perceptions form rapidly and can determine the ultimate outcomes of our clients’ legal strategies, which makes it imperative that we help shape the public narrative in order to achieve a successful outcome.”
Partner Mike House, who has built and led Hogan Lovells perennially Top-20 government relations practice, described it as “an entirely new way of thinking about how law firms can provide clients with a comprehensive approach when matters emerge at the intersection of policy, law, and media.” He added that “Mark is one of just a handful of agency leaders who has led the convergence of public affairs, lobbying, and crisis communications, and possesses a long track record of innovation and impressive growth in the firms he’s led.”
Washington D.C. based Irion said: ‘the communications firm of the future must build trust in an era when the trust-barometer has hit rock bottom. Attorneys have always been preeminently informed and compelling communicators, so I can’t imagine any better base than a world-leading law firm from which to develop and deliver supportive communications programs that help get the client’s message across and earn the trust of media and other audiences alike.”
In the coming months Irion will be adding to the team and pairing them with the many existing media-savvy lawyers in Hogan Lovells’ practices and industry sectors.
