Düsseldorf Debate It! Finishes with a Lively Battle
The Düsseldorf office's Debate It! program finished on 30 April with a lively battle between the teams from the two participating schools. The final follows weekly preparation sessions with the students by lawyers from the Düsseldorf office and fellows from Teach First Deutschland. The winning team won €1,000 for a school trip, with €500 going to the runners up.
The Debate It! project was initiated in partnership with Teach First Deutschland, which is a non-profit initiative committed to promoting equal opportunities in the educational sector. To this end, outstanding university graduates with varied academic backgrounds are deployed at schools as fellows for a period of two years.
Debate It! was officially launched in December 2013 when the students met with the Teach First Deutschland fellows and with our lawyers. From January 2014, the lawyers and fellows gave weekly 90 minute coaching sessions at the schools with about 30 students aged 14-16. These sessions focused on preparing arguments, acquiring background knowledge on the chosen debating topic, debating and arguing a point within a group, and the independent formation of opinion. The program culminated in the final on 30 April with teams from both of the participating schools competing.
