WASHINGTON, D.C, 4 January 2012 – Hogan Lovells announced today that International Trade and Investment practice senior advisor Ambassador Clayton Yeutter was appointed as an Honorary Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition for his services to New Zealand-U.S. Relations.
“I am honored to receive this recognition,” said Ambassador Yeutter. “Our two countries have long enjoyed close economic and cultural ties, and I look forward to further building upon that spirit of exchange.”
Over the course of his career, Ambassador Yeutter has had a longstanding working relationship with New Zealand. During his role as U.S. Trade Representative and also as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, he led efforts to open agricultural export opportunities throughout the world on behalf of the United States. With agriculture playing a key role in New Zealand’s economy, the country has benefitted from those efforts, for which Ambassador Yeutter worked closely with New Zealand’s Trade Ministers, including Mike Moore, the country’s current Ambassador to the United States and former Prime Minister and Director General of the World Trade Organization, as well as with former Prime Minister James Bolger.
With Hogan Lovells, Ambassador Yeutter is representing and advising Fonterra, a New Zealand cooperative and the largest exporter of dairy products in the world, on trade negotiations as it seeks additional market access in Asia through the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations. If successful, the negotiations could result in the creation the world’s largest global free-trade zone.
Ambassador Yeutter has also served as Co-Chairman of the U.S.-New Zealand Partnership Forums. The biannual meetings are attended by private sector and governmental representatives from the two countries and were launched in 2006 with Ambassador Yeutter as event Co-Chair. The meetings have enhanced relations between New Zealand and the United States, ultimately culminating in both countries being active participants in TPP negotiations.
Appointed by Her Majesty the Queen as part of the country’s New Year’s Honours, the New Zealand Order of Merit recognizes individuals who have rendered meritorious service to the Crown and nation or who have become distinguished by their eminence, talents, contributions, or other merits. Citizens of other countries who are appointed to the Order receive honorary membership.About Hogan Lovells
